Withdrawal of the Senses

Yoga Sutras 2.54

Meaning · English

When the senses no longer join with their own objects, they take on the nature of the mind itself, as though they became like it. This is the withdrawal of the senses.

Four words carry the sutra. Indriya means the senses: the powers of seeing, hearing, touching and the rest. Vishaya means an object of sense, the thing a sense reaches for. Asamprayoga means no joining, no contact being made. Pratyahara is the name of the practice: prati, back, and ahara, a taking in. It is a drawing back. The sutra says that when the senses stop joining with their objects, they take on the form of the mind (citta), as if they were that mind. The word 'as if' matters. The senses do not vanish. They stop running outward and follow the mind where it rests. Patanjali says this because the sutras just before describe a mind that can hold steady on one place. A mind pulled by every sound and sight cannot do that. Withdrawal is the step that makes the holding possible. In his commentary, Vyasa says the senses need no separate discipline once the mind is held. They follow it, the way a swarm follows its queen. The commentators who came later agree with him on the main point.

A dog out on a walk darts after every smell and sound. Its owner sits on a bench, and the dog soon lies down at the owner's feet. The dog has not been scolded. It follows where its owner rests. The senses are the dog, and the mind is the one who sits.

1. Choose a quiet time today, such as before a meal or before sleep. Sit on a chair or the floor with your back upright. 2. Set a timer for five minutes. Rest your attention on one thing, such as your breath at the nostrils. 3. When a sound or a thought pulls your attention away, notice that it has gone. Bring it back to the breath without any argument. 4. At the end, notice whether the room's sounds seemed nearer or farther than when you began.
