A Mind Made Ready
Yoga Sutras 2.53
Meaning · English
And the mind becomes fit for its fixings: the places where it can be held in concentration.
Three words carry this. Dharana comes from a root meaning to hold or to support. It is the mind held on one place, such as the tip of the nose, a flame, or a sound. The plural matters: there are several such places. Yogyata means fitness or suitability, the quality of being ready for a task. Manas is the mind that receives what the senses bring and sorts it. The opening word, ca, means 'and'. It adds one more result to those just named. Put whole, Patanjali teaches that the mind becomes fit to be held steady on a chosen place. He does not say it is held already. He says it is made capable. The problem he answers is a mind that wanders the moment it is asked to stay. His earlier sutras on breath and on the lifting of the covering say what loosens that restlessness. This sutra names what follows: readiness for concentration. Vyasa, the oldest commentator, reads the 'and' as a second fruit of breath practice. The first fruit is the covering worn away. The second is a mind fit for holding. On this point the commentators do not part ways.
A hand left stiff and numb in the cold cannot grip a pencil, however much its owner wants to write. After it is warmed and loosened, the same hand holds the pencil without effort. The mind is the hand here. Fitness comes first, and the holding follows from it.
1. Sit on a chair or the floor tonight for five minutes, back upright, hands resting. 2. Let the breath run slow and even. Do not force it. 3. Choose one small place to rest attention, such as the feeling of air at the nostrils. 4. When the mind leaves, notice that it left, and return. Count how often, without judging. 5. Afterward, note whether the mind felt more ready to stay than at the start.
