The Veil Wears Thin
Yoga Sutras 2.52
Meaning · English
From this, the covering over the light is worn away.
Three words carry the sutra. Prakasha is light, the shining or clarity of the mind. Avarana is a covering, from a root meaning to cover or enclose. Kshiyate is wears away, thins out, is used up. Tatah means from that, so the sutra points back to something already named. The whole sense: a covering lies over the mind's natural clarity, and it is worn down, not torn off. The cause is the practice of breath regulation described just before. Patanjali says this because the mind was taken to be clear in itself, yet hidden by restless habit and by the pull of the senses. The sutras before ask for breath practised in place, time and number, made long and fine. Vyasa's Bhashya reads the covering as the karma that hides discernment, and holds that the breath practice weakens it. Vyasa also says this is why breath work is counted the highest austerity. Later readers, such as Vachaspati Mishra, add little to this. They differ mainly on how much the weakening is sudden or gradual. The word kshiyate suggests gradual. Nothing is added to the light. Only the cover grows thin.
A window gone cloudy with months of dust. Each wipe of the cloth removes a little grime, and the room behind it brightens, though the glass was never dark. The dust is the covering, the wiping is the breath practice, and the daylight was there all along.
1. Sit upright on a chair or the floor, in a quiet spot, for five minutes today. 2. Breathe through the nose. Let each out-breath run a little longer and softer, never straining. 3. When thoughts crowd in, note them and return to the breath. 4. After the five minutes, sit one minute more and notice how the room and your own thinking look. Do this again tomorrow at the same hour.
