Meaning · English
The fourth kind goes past the outer and the inner field alike. It casts both aside.
Four words carry this sutra. Bahya is the outer. Abhyantara is the inner. Vishaya is the object, the field that attention rests on. Akshepi comes from a root meaning to throw off or to go beyond. Caturtha is simply the fourth. The plain sense: Patanjali names a fourth kind of regulated breath. It does not rest on an outer range or an inner range. It goes past both fields. Why he says it: the sutra before it lists three kinds, outward, inward and held. Each of those still has something to watch, the place where the breath goes or stops. A student could take the list to be complete. Patanjali adds one more that is not like the others, because attention is no longer bound to either side. Vyasa, the oldest commentator, reads it as a separate fourth, reached after the outer and inner ranges have been observed and practised. In his reading the breath's movement settles of itself. The later commentators, Vachaspati Mishra among them, do not all describe the way to it in the same terms.
Picture climbing a staircase and counting the steps, down one flight, up the next. Then you reach the landing, where you are neither going up nor down, and the counting stops. The landing is the fourth kind: the same house, but you are no longer on either flight.
1. Sit upright on a chair or the floor for three minutes, once today, at a quiet time. 2. Let the breath go on as it is. Notice where it feels outward, at the nostrils, and where it feels inward, in the chest or belly. 3. Do not hold or stretch it. Only watch for the small turn at the end of each out-breath and in-breath. 4. Stop if you feel any strain, and breathe normally.
