Breath Measured and Fine

Yoga Sutras 2.50

Meaning · English

The breath moves outward, moves inward, or is held still. It is observed by place, by time, and by count, and it becomes long and fine.

Patanjali names the forms of the breath and how it is watched. Four terms carry the sutra. Vritti is a turning, a movement; here it is the breath's movement. Stambha is a stopping, like a post fixed in the ground; it is the held breath. Desha, kala and samkhya are place, time and number, the three ways the breath is observed. Dirgha and sukshma are long and fine. So the sutra says the breath has three movements: outer (going out), inner (coming in), and held. Each is watched by where it reaches, how long it lasts, and how many rounds are made. With practice it grows long and fine. Patanjali does not say to force it. He says it is observed and it lengthens. He says this because the previous sutra gave breath control as a single idea, the cutting of the flow between in and out. A student then needs to know what is actually being worked with. This sutra gives the parts and the way of watching them. Vyasa's Bhashya takes the three as outbreath, inbreath and stopped breath. He reads place, time and number as the stretch of the body the breath touches, the length of its moments, and the count of rounds. The commentators agree on this plain sense and differ mostly on how the practice is carried out.

Pour water from a jug into a cup, slowly. At first it splashes and gulps. Then it narrows to a thin, steady thread that you can watch and count. The breath, watched by place, time and number, is meant to run the same way: from a rough gush to a long, fine thread.

1. Tonight, sit on a chair or the floor with your back upright, for about three minutes. 2. Let the breath go on as it is. Do not hold it or force it. Notice the outbreath, the inbreath, and the small pause between them. 3. Notice where you feel it: nostrils, chest, belly. Count each outbreath in your head, one to ten, then begin again. 4. If you feel dizzy or strained, stop and breathe normally.
