Bowing to the Great Maya

Mahalakshmi Ashtakam 1

Meaning · English

I bow to you, Great Maya, seated on the throne of fortune, worshipped by the gods, holding conch, discus and mace. Mahalakshmi, I bow to you.

The hymn begins with a bow, and phrases it as a wish: may this bow reach you. The first name it gives her is Great Maya, the vast power that makes the world appear as it does. Then it places her. She sits on the seat of fortune, the gods themselves worship her, and her hands hold a conch, a discus and a mace. The line closes on the words every verse will repeat: Mahalakshmi, I bow to you.

Think of a film projector in a dark hall. Faces, rivers and cities move across the screen, yet all of it comes from one beam of light behind you. Calling her Great Maya points to that beam rather than the pictures. The hymn's first bow goes to the power that makes everything show up at all.
