Garuda's Rider, Kolasura's Terror
Mahalakshmi Ashtakam 2
Meaning · English
Salutation to you who ride on Garuda, you who struck fear into the demon Kola. Goddess who takes away every sin, Mahalakshmi, I bow to you.
The hymn greets her again, now by what she does. She rides Garuda, the great eagle who carries Vishnu. To Kolasura, a demon, she is a terror. The hymn names him and tells no more of his story. Then the line turns toward the one singing. She takes away every sin, the whole of it. The same goddess a demon fears is the one who lifts wrongdoing off the person bowing to her.
Think of the tide coming in over a beach crowded with footprints, deep ones and shallow, careful ones and stumbling ones. When it pulls back, the sand is smooth all the way across. That is how the hymn names her as the remover of every sin: nothing left out, nothing too deep for the water.
