Knower of All, Giver of All
Mahalakshmi Ashtakam 3
Meaning · English
You who know all things, who grant every boon, who strike fear into every wrongdoer, who take away all sorrow: Goddess Mahalakshmi, I bow to you.
Four names, each built on the word all. She knows everything, so nothing about the person praying is hidden from her or needs explaining. She grants every kind of boon, not one kind only. She is a fear to every wrongdoer. And she takes away every sorrow. The line then closes as each verse of this hymn closes: Goddess Mahalakshmi, I bow to you. The weight falls on that repeated word. No knowledge, gift, wrong or grief is left outside her reach.
Think of the one person in a house everyone turns to. She knows where every lost thing is. She has what each child asks for. The bully at the gate will not face her. And she is the one you run to when you are crying. One person holds all four roles. The four names gather into one goddess in the same way.
