Success, Wisdom, and Freedom

Mahalakshmi Ashtakam 4

Meaning · English

Goddess who grants success and understanding, giver of enjoyment and of release, you whose form is the mantra itself. Mahalakshmi, I bow to you always.

The first line names four gifts in two pairs. Success means work reaching completion. Understanding is the clear mind that sees what to do. Then comes enjoyment, the good things of ordinary life, and release, the freedom that lies beyond them. The worldly and the spiritual sit side by side, given by the same hand. The second line says who she is: the mantra in a body. The sacred words sung to her are not only about her. They are her form, and she is that always.

When someone you love calls and says your name, you do not hear a sound that merely stands for them. The voice is them, arriving in the room. The second line makes that claim about the goddess. When her chant is sung, she is not being described from a distance. The sound itself is her presence.
