First Power, Without End
Mahalakshmi Ashtakam 5
Meaning · English
Goddess with no beginning and no end, first power, great sovereign, born of yoga, rising out of yoga: Mahalakshmi, I bow to you.
She has no starting point and no stopping point. Nothing came before her. She is called the first power, the energy already present before anything else began to move, and the great ruler over all of it. Then come two phrases about yoga: she is born of yoga, and she rises out of yoga. Yoga at root means joining, the gathered stillness of practice, and she is what comes forth from it. The line closes as every verse does, with a bow to Mahalakshmi.
Run a fingertip around a plain gold ring. It goes all the way round and comes back, and nowhere is there a seam, a first spot or a last one. You can begin tracing anywhere. That is the shape of having no beginning and no end: there is no edge where she starts.
