Lotus-Seated Mother of Worlds
Mahalakshmi Ashtakam 7
Meaning · English
Goddess seated on the lotus, whose very form is the highest reality, supreme ruler, mother of the world, Mahalakshmi, salutations to you.
The line holds two pictures together. First, a goddess sitting on a lotus: someone you can picture, with a place and a posture. Then the claim that her true form is the highest reality itself, the ground beneath everything. She is called supreme ruler, the one over all things, and mother of the world, the one everything comes from and is cared for by. The line closes with the hymn's refrain: Mahalakshmi, I bow to you.
Think of a patch of sunlight on a kitchen floor. It has edges. You can step into it and feel it warm your feet. Yet it is not a small separate thing; it is the sun itself, reaching into one room. The goddess on her lotus is like that patch: a shape you can face, and the whole of reality at once.
