Dressed in White and Jewels

Mahalakshmi Ashtakam 8

Meaning · English

Goddess wearing white garments, adorned with many kinds of ornaments, you who dwell within the world, Mother of the world, Mahalakshmi, I bow to you.

The hymn turns to how she looks. She wears white, the color of clean cloth with nothing mixed in. She also wears many kinds of jewelry, so plainness and richness sit on the same figure. Then the view widens. She stands within the world, present inside it rather than watching from far off, and she is its mother. The line closes the way every verse of this hymn closes: Mahalakshmi, I bow to you.

Picture a woman at a festival in a plain cream cotton sari, with gold bangles stacked on her wrists and a heavy necklace at her throat. The cloth keeps the gold from shouting, and the gold keeps the cloth from looking bare. Mahalakshmi's white garment and many ornaments sit together the same way: simplicity and plenty, worn by one figure.
