What Reciting the Eight Brings

Mahalakshmi Ashtakam 9

Meaning · English

Whoever recites this hymn of eight verses to Mahalakshmi with devotion gains every accomplishment and always attains a kingdom.

With the praise finished, the hymn turns to the person who sings it. The condition is plain: reading these eight verses with devotion, not just sounding out the words. Two results follow. The first is every accomplishment, a word broad enough to cover success in ordinary work and attainment in spiritual practice alike. The second is a kingdom. The hymn adds 'always' to it, so the standing it names is meant to last rather than come and go.

A recipe card ends with a line below the steps: serves four, bakes golden in forty minutes. The steps are the cooking. That last line tells what they are for. The eight verses of praise are the steps. This line is the note at the bottom, naming what the hymn itself says comes from reciting it with devotion.
