Once Daily, Twice Daily

Mahalakshmi Ashtakam 10

Meaning · English

Whoever reads it once each day, every day, it destroys great sins. Whoever reads it twice each day, every day, is blessed with wealth and grain.

The hymn now ties its rewards to how often it is read. Reading it at one time of day, every day, is said to wipe out great sins, the heavy wrongs a person carries. Reading it at two times of day, every day, is said to bring wealth and grain: money, and food stored in the house. The two lines move from clearing away what weighs on a person to filling the house with what keeps it going.

A path across a lawn appears only where people walk the same line every day. One crossing leaves no mark. Months of crossings press a bare track into the grass. The hymn's rewards are tied to that kind of wearing-in: not one reading, but the same reading at the same times, day after day.
