Reading at Three Times

Mahalakshmi Ashtakam 11

Meaning · English

Whoever recites this hymn every day at the three times of day destroys great enemies. Mahalakshmi stays pleased with them always, giving boons, auspicious.

This is the third step in a count of daily readings. Reciting the hymn at all three times of the day, every day, is said to wipe out great enemies. The three times are the day's turning points: dawn, midday and dusk. Then the promise moves from what is taken away to who stays near. Mahalakshmi becomes pleased with that reader, and the pleasure lasts. She is called a giver of boons, and auspicious, which means her nearness is itself good.

A neighbour who knocks at the same three hours every day soon finds the door left unlatched and a chair kept by the window. Nobody has to decide each time to let them in. The steady three readings work the same way. The welcome stops being an event and becomes the normal state of the house.
