This is what I have told you, good friend, and it is what you asked me: how a devotee who stays joined to his own duty may come to me, the Supreme.
Three words carry the verse. Sadhu, the word Krishna uses for Uddhava, means a good and upright person, here a warm 'dear friend'. Svadharma is 'own duty': sva is own, and dharma comes from a root meaning to hold up, so it is whatever holds your life steady in the place you now stand. Bhakta is the devotee, from bhaj, to share in; he is one who takes part in the one he loves. Krishna first says the telling is finished: this is what he has said, and it is also what Uddhava asked. Then he states that question in one line. How can a devotee, still bound to his own duty, reach Krishna, who is called param, the Supreme, the one beyond which nothing stands? The answer is the whole teaching on the stages of life. Krishna does not send Uddhava out of ordinary duty to find him. He says the way runs through it, with devotion joined to it. The Bhagavata draws this out in the frame of its own age, with its four stages and its birth-ranks. That is its picture of that society, not a rule for today. What still speaks is the pairing: duty fitted to one's stage, and love held inside it. The commentators read the verse as a closing summary. Krishna asks nothing new of Uddhava here. He asks him to carry the teaching away.
A traveller wants to reach a distant city and keeps looking for a road beside the railway line. The seat he already holds on the train is how he travels. Duty is the carriage, devotion is the destination he keeps in mind, and the journey runs through the place he already sits.
1. Tonight, pick one plain duty that belongs to your present stage of life: cooking a meal, helping a child with homework, or sitting with a parent. 2. Before you begin, say silently, 'this is offered to Krishna.' 3. Do it for ten minutes with the phone out of reach. 4. Afterwards, notice one thing: whether your mind felt a little quieter or steadier than usual while your hands were busy.
A woman runs a small tailoring shop. It is nine at night, her eyes ache, and an unfinished blouse lies under the lamp. She wonders whether real devotion would mean leaving all this for a temple and a quiet life. Krishna's closing words speak to that moment. They say she need not choose. The hem in front of her is her own duty, and the teaching says a devotee reaches him while joined to it. So she keeps stitching, but first she names who the work is for. She does the next seam, then the next, with her mind turned toward Krishna instead of toward the clock. Ordinary experience confirms that a tired person finishes a task more calmly when the purpose behind it is clear. The verse does not promise that the eyes will stop aching or that the order will be paid on time. It does not replace rest, or a doctor if the strain is more than tiredness. It tells her what Krishna teaches: that the work in her hands is not in the way of devotion.
