Thus one whose heart has been washed clean by his own duty, who knows clearly that I am his goal, and who is rich in knowledge and in lived understanding, comes to me before long. This is the way of life of those who keep the orders and stages, known by right conduct. Joined with devotion to me, that same way of life gives the highest good.
Krishna is closing his teaching on the stages of life. Three words carry it. Sattva is the clarity of the heart, and he says duty has washed it, like a cloth scrubbed until the stains lift. Jnana is knowing, here knowing that Krishna is the goal. Vijnana is that knowing made lived and tested. The commentators take the pair as knowledge taken in from teaching and understanding that has become one's own. Bhakti is loving devotion, from bhaj, to share in. The first verse describes a person. Duty has cleaned the heart, the goal is known, and knowledge has ripened. Krishna says such a person reaches him before long. The second verse gathers it up. The way of life of those who keep the orders and stages is marked by right conduct. Alone it is only conduct. With devotion to Krishna joined to it, it gives the highest good. This is the Bhagavata's picture of the society of its age, and it is not offered here as a rule of birth for today. What still speaks is the order of the teaching. Uddhava asked how to reach Krishna, and Krishna answers that the ordinary duties of one's stage prepare the heart, and devotion turns the prepared heart toward him.
A brass lamp, black with a year of smoke, is scoured with ash and tamarind until it gleams. Scouring is not light, though. It only makes the lamp ready. Duty is the scouring that cleans the heart, and devotion is the flame lit in it.
1. Choose one ordinary duty you already carry, such as cooking for the family, caring for a parent, or finishing a day's work properly. 2. Do it today without hurrying through it, and say Krishna's name, or a short prayer, once before you begin. 3. When you finish, sit quietly for one minute and notice whether your mind feels any clearer than it did before. 4. Repeat it for a week at the same hour.
A woman comes home tired and still has to wash her father-in-law's plate and sit with him while he eats. Her first thought is that this is one more thing. Nothing in the day has been thanked or noticed. The verse gives her a different order of things. The plate is her duty of the hour, and she does it fully, with attention. Then she turns the same act toward Krishna in a few quiet words. Krishna tells Uddhava that duty done this way washes the heart, and that devotion gives it direction. Step by step, the act stops being a chore to get through and becomes something offered. Ordinary experience agrees on one small point. A steady, familiar task done with attention tends to settle a restless mind, and a mind kept busy only with its own grievances rarely settles. The limit is plain. The verse does not promise that her tiredness will lift, that the old man will recover, or that her own needs can be ignored. If she is ill or worn through, she needs rest and a doctor. What it offers is a way to let the duty she already has become something more than a burden.
