Whoever worships me in this way through his own duty, always, turning to no other, seeing my presence in all beings, wins firm devotion to me. Through that unfailing devotion, Uddhava, he comes to me: great lord of all the worlds, the source and the dissolving of everything, Brahman, the cause.
Three words carry it. Svadharma is one's own duty: sva, own, and dharma, from dhr, to hold up. It is the work that holds up one's place among others. Ananyabhak means one who shares in no other: bhaj, to share in, so a person whose devotion turns nowhere else. Bhakti is loving devotion, from the same root. Krishna tells Uddhava that whoever worships him through his own duty, steadily, with an undivided heart, and sees his presence in all beings, wins firm devotion. Then, by that devotion which does not slip away, the person comes to Krishna. He names himself the great lord of all worlds, the source and the dissolving place of everything, Brahman, the cause. So the duty is not set beside the worship. It is the worship. The commentators take 'no other' to mean no rival object of love, with the duty itself offered to him. Seeing his presence in all beings is what turns duty into care: the guest, the elder and the stranger are met as his. The Bhagavata speaks here of the society of its own age, with its stages and ranks. That picture belongs to that age and is not a rule for today. What still speaks is duty fitted to where one stands, done steadily. It answers Uddhava's question about how a person living in the world reaches Krishna.
A woman walks to the village well every morning by the same path. At first it is loose dust and stones. After years of steady feet it becomes hard, packed earth that no rain washes away. Daily duty, walked for one purpose, packs down into devotion that holds.
1. Pick one ordinary task you will do anyway today, such as cooking, sweeping or answering a customer. 2. Before you begin, say silently, 'This is for Krishna.' 3. Do it at an even pace, without reaching for your phone, until it is finished. 4. Choose one person you meet today and speak to them as if Krishna were present in them. Notice how your tone changes.
A cleaner is mopping a hospital corridor at three in the morning. Her feet ache and the pay is small. Nobody is watching. Krishna's teaching gives her work another address. The mopping is offered to him, and the sleeping patients behind each door are people in whom he is present, so the floor she cleans is for them. She does not change the corridor or the hour, but she changes who the work is for. Her pace evens out, she greets the night nurse warmly, and she finishes the stretch rather than counting the minutes to dawn. Ordinary experience confirms that work done for a reason beyond wages is easier to keep up. The teaching does not promise her rest, better pay or an end to tiredness, and it does not replace sleep or medical care when she needs them. It claims only that the same hours can become worship. The text calls the fruit firm devotion, and it says nothing about comfort.
