Meaning · English

For the renunciant, the duty is calm and harmlessness. For the forest-dweller, austerity and inner seeing. For the householder, guarding living beings and offering worship. For the student, serving the teacher. Chastity, austerity, cleanliness, contentment, and friendship toward all creatures belong to the student's life. Even the householder keeps to this, approaching his wife only in the proper season. And for all of them, whatever their stage, there is worship of me.

Krishna is answering a plain question: what does each stage of life ask of a person? He gives one duty to each. The renunciant, bhikshu, keeps shama, a settled calm, and ahimsa, harming no one. The forest-dweller keeps tapas, austerity, meaning voluntary hardship that burns away softness and laziness, and iksha, looking inward to see clearly. The householder protects living beings and offers worship, which in a home means feeding, sheltering and giving. The student serves his teacher. Krishna then lists what belongs to the student's life: brahmacharya, restraint of the senses, along with austerity, cleanliness, contentment and friendliness to every creature. Even the householder keeps this restraint, coming to his wife only in the right season. The last line is for everyone: whatever the stage, worship of Krishna. This is the Bhagavata's picture of the society of its age, in which duties were sorted by stage and rank. It is a description of that world, not a rule laid on ours. What still speaks is the idea that a duty should fit where one stands. A student is not asked to renounce, nor a householder to retire. The commentators generally read the closing line as the thread joining all the stages. It is taught here so that no stage is mistaken for the goal. Each is a way of living toward Krishna.

Beads of different shapes and sizes are strung on one cord. Each bead is round or flat in its own way and sits in its own place along the string. The beads are the stages of life, each with its own duty, and the cord running through all of them is worship of Krishna.

1. Tonight, sit for two minutes and name the stage of life you are in: student, parent, carer, retired, or working. Then name one duty that stage asks of you this week. 2. Do that duty once tomorrow, however small. 3. Clean one shelf, table or corner until it is tidy, and notice how it feels to have finished. 4. Say one friendly word to someone you usually pass without speaking to.

A woman in her sixties hands the keys of the family shop to her son and stands on the pavement that evening, unsure what she is for now. The verse gives her a different question from the one she is asking. Instead of asking what she has lost, she can ask what this stage of life holds for her. Step by step: she names the duty near at hand, perhaps advising when asked, giving her mornings to a neighbour or a temple, and keeping her own house and body clean and orderly. She practises contentment with what she has, and friendliness toward the people around her, including the son who now sits in her chair. The text itself says all of this is held together by worship of Krishna. Ordinary experience agrees that a person with no clear role in a new season of life tends to drift and sour, and that small daily duties steady the mind. The verse does not promise that the loss of a role stops hurting. It does not settle questions of money, health or family quarrels, and a doctor is still the one to see about a body that is failing.
