Bhagavata Purana 11.18.41

Meaning · English

The one who strikes down dharma denies the gods, denies the Self that sits within him, and denies me. His stains not yet ripened away, he is cut off from this world and from the next.

Krishna is describing a particular failure, not doubt in general. Dharmahā means one who strikes down dharma, from han, to strike. This is the man who wears the renunciant's robe while throwing out what dharma holds up. He denies the gods, the Self, and Krishna himself. Ātmastha means abiding in oneself: the Self is not far off but sits within him, and he still denies it. The key phrase is avipakva-kaṣāya. Kaṣāya is a dye or dregs, the residue of craving, anger and pride that clings to the mind. Avipakva means unripe, not yet cooked through. Sridhara Svami, as far as I can say, reads it as these leftover stains of desire, still active. So the man has taken up the last stage before the stains have worn away. He loses this world, because he has left its duties and its people. He loses the next, because nothing in him has been made ready for it. Krishna gives this to Uddhava as a warning after describing the true renunciant: the robe does not do the work. What it asks of the listener is honesty about whether the inner work has ripened before any outer step is taken.

A tenant gives up his old room before the new one is ready and stands in the road with his bags. The road is neither house. The old room is this world, the new one is the next, and the unready mind is the man with nowhere to put his bags down.

1. Tonight, sit for five minutes with paper and name one thing you tend to drop when it gets hard: a duty, a call, a habit of care. 2. Ask whether you are leaving it because you have outgrown it, or because the craving or irritation around it is still alive. 3. If it is still alive, keep doing that duty this week, quietly and fully, and notice what the irritation does after three or four days.

A schoolteacher retires on Friday. At the party he announces he is done with obligations: no more weddings, no more family calls, he will sit on the verandah and be at peace. By Wednesday he is restless, short with his wife, and sour about everything he gave up. Krishna's teaching, in the Gita's own terms, would slow him at the first step. Before leaving anything, he would ask what is still unfinished inside: the old irritations, the wish to be noticed, the dislike of certain people. Then he would keep the small duties that hold his days together, such as greeting neighbours and helping with a meal, while that work is done. Ordinary experience bears out one part of this: a person who cuts away everything abruptly often carries the same temper into the quiet. The verse does not promise that the restlessness will vanish, nor that grief or low mood will lift by being dutiful. A long-lasting low mood after a big life change is something to take to a doctor, not only to dharma.
