Let the devoted student serve the teacher with trust and without fault-finding, for as long as it takes to know Brahman, honoring the teacher as myself. But the man whose six enemies are unrestrained, whose senses are fierce horses dragging the charioteer, who has neither knowledge nor dispassion, only lives off the triple staff of the renunciant.

Four words carry this. Bhakta is one who shares in something with loving devotion, here the student who serves. Shraddha is trust, a settled giving of the heart. Anasuyaka means free of asuya, the grudging habit of finding fault. Tridanda is the triple staff a renunciant carries, a sign of the life. Krishna tells Uddhava that a student should serve the teacher, trusting him and not picking at him, until Brahman is truly known. The teacher is to be honored as Krishna himself. The second verse turns to the opposite figure. His six inner enemies, commonly counted as desire, anger, greed, delusion, pride and envy, are not held in check. His senses are wild horses, and the one meant to drive is pulled along. He has no knowledge and no dispassion, the colour gone out of craving. He only lives off the staff, using the outward sign to be fed and respected. Krishna teaches this because Uddhava has been told to seek a teacher. The two verses show what the seeking is for: inner mastery, not a costume. This is the Bhagavata's picture of the society of its age, with its stages of life. What still speaks is plain. Learn with trust, and do not let the badge stand in for the thing.

A bakery with its sign freshly painted and its shutters down, no oven lit, no bread inside. People pass and assume food is made there. The staff and robe are the sign. The unlit oven is the unrestrained senses, and the missing knowledge and dispassion are the bread.

1. Choose one person you are learning from, a cook, an elder, a colleague. For one conversation this week, listen for ten minutes without correcting or arguing in your head. 2. Afterwards, write down one thing they said that you would have missed if you had been busy finding fault. 3. Tonight, pick one habit you wear as a label, such as being calm or being generous. Ask honestly whether you practised it today.

A young apprentice carpenter has sanded the same board for three days. The master says do it again. His mind fills with reasons the master is wrong and the method is old. Krishna's teaching would change the moment in steps. First he notices the grudging voice, which the text calls asuya. Second, he sets it aside long enough to do the task as shown. Third, he judges the method after he has understood it, not before. Ordinary experience confirms that a mind busy with objections stops taking in what is in front of it. The second half of the teaching speaks to the master as much as the student. A badge, title or robe is not the thing itself, and a person can hold the outward sign while the senses still pull him about. The text is saying that restraint and understanding must be real, not worn. The teaching does not promise the master is right, or that every teacher deserves trust. It also does not make the board come out smooth on the first try. It says only what the learner is asked to bring.
