If one knows it here, in this life, then there is truth. If one does not know it here, the loss is great. The wise search it out in each and every being, and on leaving this world they become deathless.
Three words carry the verse. Satya is what is real, from sat, "that which is." Vinashti is ruin or loss, from a root meaning "to be lost, to perish." Amrita is "deathless," from a-mrita, "not dead." The teacher is speaking to a pupil who asked what sends the mind out toward things. He has said that Brahman, the reality behind the mind's own workings, is not grasped the way an object is grasped. Now he says when it matters: here. To know it in this life is to have found what is real. To miss it is a great loss. The wise, called dhira, meaning steady and thoughtful, do not stop at one place. They look into being after being and find the same reality in each. Then, leaving this world, they become deathless. The reason is the urgency of the opening. A life is the only place where this knowing can happen, and it can be missed. Shankara reads the great loss as the round of new births, and reads the deathlessness as becoming Brahman itself. The verse asks the listener to take the search as a present matter, not a task for later.
A farmer holds good seed while the rains are on the land. If he sows in season, the field is green by autumn. If he waits, the season goes by and the field stays bare, however good the seed. This life is the sowing season. The seed is the search for what is real, and the bare field is the loss.
1. Tonight, sit for five minutes before sleep and ask one question: what did I treat as most real today? Name it in a few words. 2. Tomorrow, pick one person you will meet, a neighbour or a shop assistant. For one minute, listen as if the same awareness that looks out of you looks out of them too. 3. Pick one thing you keep postponing, a conversation, a question to an elder, a quiet hour. Do the first small part of it this week, and note how it feels to have started.
A woman hears that her old schoolteacher is in a hospice across town. She has meant to visit for ten years. Tonight she is tired, the traffic is bad, and tomorrow looks easier. The verse speaks to that tiredness. It says the chance is here, in this life, and that missing it is the real loss. So she goes today, and does not wait for a better week. At the bedside she does not rehearse what to say. She looks at him as one person among the many she has met, in whom the same thing is present. The text calls the wise those who see in this way, being after being. Ordinary experience confirms how quietly such chances pass: they rarely announce their last day. The verse does not promise that he will recover, that she will find the right words, or that her grief will be lighter. It does not replace the care of the doctors and nurses around him. It asks only that she not leave the matter for later.
