Known in Every Awareness

Kena Upanishad 2.4

Meaning · English

It is rightly understood when it is known in every act of awareness, for then deathlessness is found. Through the Self a person gains strength. Through knowledge a person gains deathlessness.

Three words carry the verse. Pratibodha is awareness, from budh, to wake, with prati meaning in each one. So it is every single waking of the mind to something: each sight, each thought, each noticing. Virya is strength, vigour, the power to act and hold firm. Amritatva is deathlessness, from a, not, and mrita, dead. Atman is the Self, the one within who is aware. Brahman, the ground of all things that the whole Upanishad is about, is the subject here. The teacher answers the pupil's puzzle. If Brahman cannot be grasped like an object, how is it known? The teacher says it is known in each act of awareness, as the one who is present in every knowing. Then deathlessness is found. The strength comes through the Self. The deathlessness comes through knowledge. The text gives no further reason. It simply sets the two gains side by side. Shankara reads the first line this way: Brahman is known as the witness of every thought, the awareness that stays the same while thoughts change. Shankara also says strength gained by other means, such as wealth, is limited, while strength from the Self is not. The verse asks the listener to turn from what is known to the knowing itself.

A lamp is lit in a dark room. You never see the light on its own. You see the table, the cup, the face across from you, and each is seen by it. The lamp is known in every seeing. Awareness is like that light, and the teacher says it is found in each act of knowing.

1. Tonight, sit for two minutes before sleep. Notice one sound in the room. 2. Ask quietly, "What is aware of this sound?" Do not answer in words. Stay with the sense of being aware. 3. Tomorrow, at one ordinary moment such as washing a cup or waiting for a lift, ask the same question once. Notice whether the awareness feels the same as it did at night, though the thing noticed has changed.

A man wakes at four in the morning in a hotel room. For a few seconds he does not know the city, the bed or the hour. He still knows that he is awake and that someone is noticing the dark. Then the room rebuilds itself around him: the curtain, the hum of the fridge, the meeting at nine. The verse turns him toward that first moment. The details came and went, and the noticing stayed the same. Ordinary experience agrees that attention is felt before its contents are named. The Upanishad teaches that this noticing is where the Self is found, and that strength comes from it where he had thought to find it in the day's plans. So when the meeting worries him, he can rest on the awareness that holds the worry, before arguing with the worry itself. His breath settles. He chooses what to do first. The verse does not promise that the meeting goes well, or that fear never returns. It does not replace sleep, medicine or a doctor if the waking at four becomes a pattern that wears him down.
