Nothing Is Ever Born

Gaudapada Karika 3.48

Meaning · English

No soul is ever born. For it there is no coming into being. This is the highest truth: in it, nothing whatever is born.

Three words carry it. Jiva is the living individual, from jiv, to live: the one you call "me", who breathes, remembers and suffers. Sambhava is coming into being, from sam and bhu, to become. Satya, truth, comes from sat, that which is. Gaudapada says no jiva is born, and for it there is no sambhava at all. Then he calls this the highest truth, the standpoint where nothing whatever is born. The last clause widens the first. It is not only souls: nothing at all truly arises when seen from there. Why say it now? The verses just before describe a mind that neither sinks nor wanders, and name what it meets as unborn. A student may ask what is left to know once the mind rests. Gaudapada answers that what is there was never made, so there is no beginning to trace and no ending to fear. The commentators read this as the settled conclusion of the chapter's argument. Nagarjuna, by a different road, also argued that nothing truly arises. The teaching does not deny that births, persons and daily life are experienced. It speaks of what the self is at root. What it asks of the listener is patience with one claim: that what you are has no origin.

A moon shows in a bucket of water. Tip the bucket and the moon seems to break and vanish; fill it again and a moon seems to appear. Yet the moon in the sky was never made and never lost. The reflection comes and goes; what it shows does not.

1. Tonight, sit quietly for five minutes with the lights low. 2. Let one thought or worry arrive. Notice it has a start and an end. 3. Ask: was I made when it began, or ended when it left? Notice what stayed awake through it. 4. Do not argue the answer. Simply look, then go on with your evening.

A grandfather stands at the hospital window the night his granddaughter is born, wondering where this small person came from and where her story begins. The verse changes that moment in steps. First, it leaves the baby's body alone: it was formed, weighed and named tonight, and the text does not dispute that. Second, it says of the one who will look out from those eyes that no coming into being touches it. Third, it loosens his search for a starting point, so that he can hold her without needing the question answered. Ordinary experience gives him one small support: the "I" that was seven years old feels the same as the "I" at seventy, though the body has changed in every part. The limit is plain. The verse does not lift his worry about her breathing or feeding, and it is no substitute for the paediatrician beside the cot. It does not dull the joy of the night, and it does not promise that grief will never come in the years ahead.
