When the mind neither sinks into dullness nor is thrown outward again, when it does not stir and shows no appearances, then it is Brahman, complete. Resting in itself, peaceful, quiet as a flame gone out, it cannot be put into words. It is the highest happiness. The unborn, known by the unborn as the one thing to be known: this the wise call all-knowing.
Three words carry the verse. Brahman comes from a root meaning to grow vast: the limitless reality the Upanishads speak of. Nirvana means blown out, as a lamp is blown out; the word here names the quiet when the restless burning stops. Buddhist writers of the same centuries used it too, in their own way. Aja means unborn, never come into being. Now the clauses. The mind is not sinking into the blankness of sleep, and not flung outward again to objects. It does not shake, and nothing appears to it as a separate thing. Gaudapada says that is Brahman itself, already accomplished, not something made. It rests in itself, it is peaceful, and it is the highest happiness. Words cannot hold it, because words work by pointing at one thing and not another. The last line says the unborn is known by the unborn. Nothing born, no passing thought, is the knower. Shankara reads this as the Self known by itself alone. That is why it is called all-knowing: nothing is left outside it to know. He teaches this here to finish the practice of the earlier verses. They remove the two faults of the mind, and this verse names what remains when both are gone. It asks the listener to keep the mind away from both faults until that remains.
A glass of muddy water left on a table. Stirred, it is cloudy; but it is not clear until the silt has settled and nothing swirls. Then you see straight through to the table beneath. The mind with no sinking and no stirring is the clear glass, and what shows through it was there all along.
1. Choose one ordinary pause today, such as waiting for the kettle or the bus, and give it three minutes. 2. Notice which way the mind leans: toward a fog that wants to doze, or toward a jumpy reach for the phone and the next errand. 3. Name the lean quietly, and sit up or look around until it eases. 4. Stay a little longer in whatever is left, even if it is only half a minute of plain quiet, and do not chase it.
A man parks outside the school gate after drop-off. The engine is off. In five minutes he must be at work. His mind does one of two things: it goes slack and foggy, or it jumps to the phone, the messages, the day's list. The verse's two faults are exactly these. Gaudapada's teaching is to catch the drift either way and not follow it. The man notices the fog and sits upright, breathes, opens his eyes wide. He notices the jumpiness and puts the phone face down for a few minutes. What remains is a short stretch of plain awareness, neither dull nor busy. Ordinary experience confirms that tiredness pushes the mind toward fog and worry pushes it toward restlessness, and that the middle is easiest after rest and a settled body. The verse does not promise that this ends worry or the long day ahead. Persistent exhaustion or racing thoughts that will not settle belong with a doctor. The text itself speaks of the stillness of Brahman, which it says words cannot reach.
