When the mind sinks into dullness, wake it. When it scatters, quiet it again. Know it when it is stained with leftover craving. When it has come to balance, do not stir it. Let it not taste the pleasure found there. Free of clinging, let one stay in clear understanding. And when the mind is still and no longer roams, bring it to one point with steady effort.
Gaudapada gives a short map of the mind's trouble spots, and what to do at each. Laya is the sinking: the mind goes slack, drowsy, blank, close to sleep. It is woken. Vikshepa is the scattering: the mind runs after plans, wants and worries. It is quieted, and the verse says 'again', because it will run again. Kashaya is a stain, a hidden residue of craving that sits quietly while the mind seems calm. The text says to recognise it, not to fight it blindly. When the mind reaches evenness, neither dull nor scattered, it is left alone. Disturbing it would spoil it. Then comes the subtle trap. Stillness feels pleasant, and the verse says not to savour that pleasure. Clinging to the sweetness is still clinging. Prajna, clear understanding, is what keeps the mind free of it. The last line asks for the unmoving mind to be made one, with steady effort, and the commentators read this as resting in the single Self. The reason for all this comes from the surrounding teaching. Gaudapada holds that the mind at rest, neither sunk nor scattered, is Brahman itself. So practice is a matter of removing the two faults, not of reaching somewhere new. The verse asks the listener to learn which fault is present now, and to apply the right remedy, not the same one every time.
A lamp flame behaves in three ways. In a stuffy closed room it burns low and sleepy. In a draught it flickers and throws shadows everywhere. In still air it stands straight and quiet. Dullness is the stuffy room, scattering is the draught, and the steady mind is the upright flame that is left alone.
1. Once today, pick a quiet spot and sit for five minutes without a screen. 2. Notice which state arrives first: drowsy and foggy, or busy and jumping. Name it silently, 'sinking' or 'scattering'. 3. If sinking, straighten your back and open your eyes wider. If scattering, slow your breathing and let each thought pass without following it. 4. If a calm moment comes, do not examine it or congratulate yourself. Let it be, and when the five minutes end, simply stop.
A man sits in a hospital corridor at three in the morning, waiting for news about his father. First his head nods and his thoughts go blank. He jerks awake and starts scrolling his phone, then replays every worst case. The verse offers him an order of work. When he is nodding, he stands, washes his face and walks the corridor. When his mind races, he sits, lets his breath lengthen and returns to the sound of the ward. When a calm patch comes, he does not poke at it to check whether it is still there, and he does not cling to it either. He simply stays with it until it passes. Ordinary experience confirms that tiredness dulls the mind and worry scatters it, and that the two need different answers. The verse does not promise that the news will be good, that grief will lift or that fear will not return. It also does not replace sleep, food or a doctor's care for a body that needs them. It offers only a way of handling the mind while the waiting goes on.
