By skill let the scattered mind be held back from desire and enjoyment. Let the mind, well settled, be held in the same way when it falls into dissolution. As desire is, so is dissolution. Remembering that all is sorrow, let one turn back from desire and enjoyment. Remembering that all is unborn, one sees nothing that is born.
Four words carry it. Upaya is skill, a means or knack; the word rules out force. Vikshipta is the scattered mind, thrown outward toward things it wants. Laya is dissolution: the mind sinking into sleep or a blank, dull stillness. Aja is the unborn, the word Gaudapada keeps returning to. The clauses go in order. The scattered mind is to be drawn back from wanting and enjoying, and by skill, not by a fight. The sunk mind needs the same care, and Gaudapada says dissolution is to be treated just as desire is. Both lose the mind, one in the crowd and one in the fog. Then he gives two reminders. Remembering that all this is sorrow, one turns away from craving. The commentators read this as the sorrow bound up with chasing what changes. Remembering that all is unborn, one sees nothing born. This echoes the Buddhist thinkers of his time, Nagarjuna among them, who also denied that things truly arise. Gaudapada argues it his own way, from the unborn self. He teaches it here because the no-contact yoga looks impossible. The reader asks how a mind that is pulled and a mind that goes numb ever become still. The answer is to watch for both, steer gently, and keep two remembrances close.
A cyclist rides a narrow lane with a ditch on each side. Pulled too far left, she lands in one ditch. Over-corrected right, she lands in the other. She stays up by small, steady steering. The two ditches are craving and dullness, and the steady steering is the skill the verse asks for.
1. Tonight, notice one pull toward something you want, such as the phone, a snack or a purchase. Name it silently: "pulling." 2. Before acting, recall one time this same want left you restless or sorry afterwards. Give it one breath. 3. Turn to something plain for five minutes, such as a glass of water or a short walk. Do not scold yourself. 4. Later, notice if you slid into a numb, foggy state instead. Sit up, wash your face, and name that too.
A young father has finally got the baby to sleep. It is ten at night, and he wants a cigarette he gave up months ago. Another pull comes with it: to fall onto the sofa and scroll until nothing matters. The verse speaks to both pulls. He first notices the want as a want, not as an order. He then remembers what the last cigarette cost him, the cough and the shame the next morning. That is the remembering of sorrow. He does not argue with the craving for an hour. He drinks water, steps onto the balcony and lets ten minutes pass. If he feels himself sinking into the scrolling blur, he treats that as the same trouble and gets up. Ordinary experience confirms that tiredness weakens restraint, so he may also go to bed early. The verse does not promise that the craving will vanish, or that a firm decision removes real dependence. Where smoking, drink or low mood has a grip, a doctor's help belongs beside this practice, not beneath it.
