Meaning · English
As a man might empty the ocean with the tip of a blade of kusha grass, taking up one single drop at a time, so the mind is to be held in check, and without growing weary.
Three words carry the teaching. Nigraha means restraint: holding the mind back, as one takes hold of a runaway horse's rein. Kushagra is the tip of kusha grass, a thin, sharp blade used in Indian rites. Aparikhedatah means without weariness, without being worn down. Khed is the tiredness that makes a person give up. Gaudapada sets a huge task beside a tiny tool. The ocean is the mind's endless churning. The grass tip lifts one drop at a time. He says the work can be done only the way the ocean would be emptied, by many small acts, patiently repeated, with no sinking of heart. This answers a worry raised just before. He has called the no-contact yoga hard to see, and said that restraining the mind is its whole ground. A reader may hear that and feel the job is hopeless. He answers that it is slow, not impossible, and that the real danger is discouragement, not the size of the sea. The commentators read the image as a teaching on steady, undiscouraged effort. What it asks of the listener is to keep returning, to count each return as a drop lifted, and not to quit when the water looks unchanged.
Under a neem tree, a woman sweeps the courtyard each morning. By noon new leaves have fallen. She does not scold the tree or give up the broom. Each sweep clears one patch. The mind is the courtyard, the wandering thoughts are the leaves, and every gentle return is one sweep.
1. Pick one ordinary five-minute stretch today, such as waiting for the kettle or the first minutes of a walk. 2. Rest your attention on one thing, the sound of the kettle or your footsteps. 3. When the mind runs off, as it will, notice it and bring it back once, calmly, without a word of blame. 4. Keep a count of returns in your head. Treat each return as one drop lifted, not as a failure. 5. Stop when the five minutes end, and note how you spoke to yourself.
A woman sits on a kitchen stool at five in the morning, on the ninth day of trying to be quiet for ten minutes before the house wakes. Her mind has gone to the gas bill, then to her sister's phone call, then to the gas bill again. She feels she has failed. The verse changes that moment in steps. First, the wandering is expected, since the text compares the task to emptying the sea. Second, the noticing is itself the drop lifted, so it counts as the work. Third, the return is made without anger, because ordinary experience shows that scolding oneself tires a person faster than the wandering does, and weariness is the thing Gaudapada names as the enemy. Fourth, she stops when the time ends and comes back tomorrow. The verse does not promise that the gas bill will shrink, that worry will leave, or that ten minutes will bring stillness. A person whose worry will not lift, who cannot sleep, or who feels low for weeks should speak to a doctor.
