Meaning · English
Its limbs are said to be eight, and on them treatment rests. Vata, pitta and kapha: in brief, these are the three doshas. Disturbed, they destroy the body; undisturbed, they sustain it. Though they pervade it, they have their seats below, between and above the heart and the navel.
Vagbhata opens with two counts. Ayurveda has eight limbs, eight branches of practice, and every kind of treatment stands on them. Then the doshas are named, in brief, as three. Ayurveda explains elsewhere that vata is movement: breath, pulse, the passage of food and of thought. Pitta is transformation: digestion, warmth, one thing becoming another. Kapha is structure: what holds, moistens and steadies. The word dosha carries the sense of what can go wrong, and the verse gives both sides at once. Undisturbed, the three keep a body alive. Disturbed, the same three wear it down. The verse locates the trouble in the body's own forces. They run through the whole body, yet each has a home, in the verse's own order: vata below the navel, pitta between navel and heart, kapha above the heart. In this system's terms, health is a working order kept among forces a person already has, not a thing acquired from outside.
A pot of dal on the stove. The pot and its water hold everything together. The flame beneath turns hard lentils into food. The spoon keeps it moving so nothing sticks. With all three in measure, there is supper. Let the flame run high or the stirring stop, and the same three ruin it. Kapha, pitta and vata are pictured like this: the forces that cook can also burn.
Modern medicine has no dosha. No blood test finds vata, and there is no good evidence that sorting people into dosha types predicts illness. Read as functions rather than substances, though, the three map loosely onto real physiology: movement as gut motility, circulation and nerve signalling; transformation as digestion and metabolism; structure as tissues, fluids and mucus. The idea that the body's own systems both sustain and harm it fits today's thinking well, since inflammation and immunity protect when regulated and damage when they are not. The seats roughly echo anatomy too: the lower bowel below, the stomach and liver in the middle, the lungs and their mucus above. The eight branches resemble modern specialties, including internal medicine, paediatrics, surgery, toxicology and care of the elderly.
