The Clock and the Fire

Meaning · English
Through a life, a day and a night, and a meal, they hold the end, the middle and the beginning, in that order. By them agni turns irregular, sharp and dull; when they are even, it is even.
Vagbhata gives the three doshas their hours. The doshas are this system's names for how a body behaves: vata is movement, pitta is heat and transformation, kapha is structure and steadiness. The verse names end, middle and beginning in that order, so they pair with vata, pitta and kapha as named in the previous verse. Vata holds the end, pitta the middle, kapha the beginning. So kapha belongs to childhood, to the early part of the day and of the night, and to the start of a meal. Pitta belongs to the middle years, to the middle hours, and to the middle of digestion. Vata belongs to old age, to the late hours, and to the end of digestion. Then he turns to agni, the body's power to digest and transform. Vata makes it irregular, strong one hour and weak the next. Pitta makes it sharp and quick to hunger. Kapha makes it dull and slow. When the three are even, agni is even. The verse gives no reason. In this system's terms, a body is read by its qualities, and those shift with the hour and the years. The teaching asks a person to notice the time as well as the meal.
Think of a wood stove over one long day. At first light the logs are damp and the fire is slow to catch. By noon it roars and eats whatever you feed it. Late at night it gutters, flaring and sinking by turns. The fire is the same; the hour changes how it burns. Agni moves the same way through a day, a meal and a life.
Parts of this sit close to what is known today. The body runs on daily rhythms, and appetite, alertness and the handling of food do change across the day and night. Digestion also changes with age. Children eat to grow. In older age appetite often shrinks and bowel habits become less regular. A family doctor would recognise that pattern, though not the reasons given for it. Agni maps loosely onto digestion and appetite. The doshas themselves have no modern counterpart: no test finds kapha in the morning or vata in the evening. The neat split of life, day and meal into three phases is a teaching framework, not a measured finding. It works best as a prompt to watch how one's own appetite moves with the clock.
