At the start of life, through the doshas present in the semen and the menstrual blood, as poison does not harm the poison-worm, three natures arise, each separately: low, middle and best. Of all of them, the nature with even doshas is best; natures born of two doshas are faulted.
Each person begins with a makeup, called prakriti, that is set at conception. Vagbhata places the doshas in the seed of both parents, shukra and artava, so the mix they carry becomes the child's nature. The doshas are the text's three words for what a body does: vata moves, pitta transforms, kapha holds together. When one dosha leads, it gives one of three single natures, ranked low, middle and best. The traditional reading pairs these with vata, pitta and kapha in that order. When all three are even, that is best of all. When two lead together, that nature is faulted. The poison-worm is the verse's own reason. A creature born in poison is not killed by it, and a person is not undone by the dosha that is their own nature. Later explanations suggest that a two-dosha nature is pulled two ways at once, so it is harder to keep steady. This asks a person to treat their nature as a starting point for living, not as an illness to fix.
Look at the grain in a wooden plank. It was laid down while the tree grew, long before any carpenter touched it. A good carpenter does not fight the grain. He cuts and planes along it. Prakriti is that grain. It is set at the start, and daily care works with its run, never trying to plane it away.
The idea that each person starts with a built-in constitution fits much of what is known today. Body build, how fast someone burns energy, how they handle heat, and much of temperament are shaped by inheritance from both parents. They show early and stay fairly stable through life. A family doctor would agree that people differ from the start and that care should fit the person. Where the two part ways is the system itself. Modern medicine has no equivalent of three doshas as the units that make up a constitution. There is no settled method for sorting people into such types. Ranking natures as low, middle or best has no modern support. Today, a person's inherited makeup is not graded as better or worse.
