Seven Tissues, Body's Wastes
Ashtanga Hridayam, Sutrasthana 1.13
Meaning · English
Rasa, blood, flesh, fat, bone, marrow and semen: these seven are the dhatus, the tissues, and they are what can be spoiled. Urine, faeces, sweat and the rest are the malas, the wastes; these too.
Vagbhata lists what the body is made of. Rasa is the nourishing fluid made from digested food. Then come blood, flesh, fat, bone, marrow and shukra, the reproductive tissue. These seven are the dhatus, a word that means 'what holds up'. He calls them dushya, the ones that can be spoiled. Beside them stand the malas, the wastes: urine, faeces, sweat and others like them. They can be spoiled too. The verse gives no reason, but in this system's terms the shape is clear. The doshas, vata, pitta and kapha, the body's movement, heat and structure, whose qualities the two verses just before this one list, are what go out of order. The tissues and wastes are where that disorder lands. Ayurveda explains elsewhere, not in this verse, that agni, the digestive fire, builds each tissue in turn, and that ojas is the finest essence of them all. So a body is read in two layers: the forces that act, and the matter acted on. Wastes are counted with that matter, which suggests that what leaves the body shows how well it works.
A storm passes over a farm at night. In the morning nobody sees the wind itself, only flattened wheat, a leaning fence, a gutter choked and spilling over. In this system's terms the doshas are the weather. The seven tissues are the crops and fences that take the damage, and the wastes are the gutters, often the first place trouble shows.
The list reads as a fair outline of anatomy. Rasa sits close to plasma and lymph, and blood, muscle, fat, bone, marrow and reproductive tissue are all recognised today. Some things are missing, such as nerve tissue and skin, and the idea that each tissue is made from the one before has no modern match: tissues grow from their own cells and are fed side by side through the blood. The attention to wastes holds up well. A family doctor still asks about urine, bowel habits and sweating, because changes in them are early signs worth noticing. The word dushya, a tissue spoiled by a disordered force, has no exact modern equivalent, though medicine also separates a cause from the tissue it harms.
