Ojas, Essence of Tissues

Meaning · English
Ojas is remembered as the highest radiance of the tissues, those that end with shukra. Seated in the heart, it still pervades the body and secures the body's continuance. It is unctuous, of the nature of soma, pure, faintly reddish-yellow. When it is destroyed, destruction surely follows. While it remains, the body remains.
Vagbhata is naming the finest product of the body's nourishment. Ayurveda explains elsewhere that food is built up step by step through seven dhatus, or tissues: nourishing fluid, blood, muscle, fat, bone, marrow and shukra, the reproductive essence. Ojas is the tejas of all of them. Tejas here means their brilliance, their concentrated best. Its seat is the heart, yet it reaches everywhere, and it keeps the body going. Then come its qualities. It is snigdha, oily and smooth. It is somatmaka, like soma: cool, moist and nourishing, the opposite of what burns. It is shuddha, pure. Its colour is a faint reddish-yellow. The verse gives no reason for any of this. It states one plain consequence: lose ojas and the person is lost; keep it and the person lasts. In this system's terms, vitality is not a separate gift. It is the yield of well-nourished tissues. It can also be depleted, as the next verse explains.
Think of an oil lamp. The oil sits in the bowl, yet it climbs through the whole wick and feeds the flame at its tip. A fine wick in a dry lamp gives no light. Ojas works the same way. It is seated in the heart like oil in the bowl, but it soaks through every tissue. When it runs out, the flame of life goes with it.
There is no single fluid in today's physiology that matches ojas. No test finds a reddish-yellow essence in the heart, and it is not something to measure. Read as an idea, it fits something a good doctor recognises: overall reserve, the body's capacity to resist illness, recover and stay steady. That reserve does rest on sound nutrition and healthy tissue, and long undernourishment, chronic stress and poor sleep wear it down. That much agrees. The heart as its seat has a loose echo, since the heart and circulation carry nourishment to every tissue. The claim that its loss means death is true of severe wasting, but it is a whole-body picture, not one substance running out. Anyone noticing real weakness or wasting needs a doctor, not a theory.
