Meaning · English
Ojas is that from which the many states dwelling in the body come to be. It wanes through anger, hunger, worry, grief, overwork and the like. When it wanes, a person grows weak and often afraid, broods, and the senses feel strained. The lustre dulls, the mind sinks, the body turns dry and thin. Then the remedy is the life-giving herbs, milk, meat broths and such, for as ojas grows, contentment, nourishment and strength rise in the body.
Ojas is the text's name for the body's deepest reserve. It is the finest yield of all the tissues, and Vagbhata says the body's many states arise from it. Five things spend it, and others like them: anger, hunger, worry, grief and exhaustion. Three of the five belong to the mind. The signs of loss are just as mixed. The person becomes weak and easily frightened, keeps brooding, and the senses feel strained. The face loses its glow, the mood falls, the skin and body turn dry, and the frame grows thin. The remedy is nourishment: the jivaniya herbs, a group the classics call 'life-giving', along with milk and meat broths. The verse gives its own reason: as ojas grows, contentment, nourishment and strength rise. One way to read this list: ojas is called oily and moon-like, so what drains it is heating, drying and restless, and what restores it is moist and rich. The text counts anger and grief as real costs to the body, alongside missed meals.
1. Today, eat each meal at a regular time instead of working through hunger, and sit down to eat it. 2. When anger or worry rises, pause and take ten slow breaths before you speak or act. 3. Stop one task before you are spent. Take ten quiet minutes in the mid-afternoon, sitting or lying still. 4. Tonight, write three lines about any grief or worry you are carrying, then close the notebook and turn to something restful.
Today's medicine has no single substance that matches ojas. The pattern the verse describes is familiar, though. Long anger, grief, worry, overwork and too little food can show up as tiredness, weight loss, low mood, anxiety, poor sleep and dull, dry skin. Doctors also recognise that mind and body wear down together. Rest, steady meals and enough protein and energy are standard parts of recovery. Milk and broths are easy to digest, which is why they have long been used for convalescence. There is no good evidence that the classical life-giving herbs work as described. Herbs can interact with medicines and are not right for everyone. Skipping meals can be risky for someone who is ill, pregnant, elderly or very young. Weakness and weight loss that persist can have medical causes and are worth taking to a doctor.
