Meaning · English
Vata is fivefold, divided as prana and the rest. Prana sits in the head and moves in chest and throat. It holds intellect, heart, senses and mind, and does spitting, sneezing, belching, breathing and swallowing food. Udana's seat is the chest. It moves in nose, navel and throat, and works speech, effort, energy, strength, complexion and memory. Vyana, in the heart, moves through the whole body at great speed: walking, bending down, lifting, closing and opening the eyes and the like. Nearly every action of the embodied is bound to it. Samana, near agni, moves all through the gut: it takes in food, cooks it, separates it, lets it go. Apana, seated in the region of the anus, ranges over hips, bladder, penis and thighs, and brings out semen, menstrual blood, stool, urine and the fetus.
Vata is the dosha of movement. Vagbhata lays it out in five kinds, each with a home and a task. Prana lives in the head and works through chest and throat. It holds intellect, heart, senses and mind together, and runs spitting, sneezing, belching, breathing and swallowing. Udana, the upward movement, sits in the chest and reaches nose, navel and throat. Speech, effort, energy, strength, complexion and memory are its work. Vyana starts from the heart and reaches the whole body fast: walking, bending, lifting, blinking, nearly every action. Samana sits beside agni, the digestive fire, and works throughout the gut. It takes food in, cooks it, sorts nourishment from waste, and lets the waste go. Apana lives in the region of the anus, across hips, bladder, penis and thighs. It pushes out semen, menstrual blood, stool, urine and the baby at birth. Vagbhata gives no reason for the split. In this system's terms, knowing where each movement lives lets a vaidya say which one has faltered. A slow bowel and a lost voice are then different troubles in different places.
Think of a house wired for electricity. In the kitchen the current heats the stove. In the hallway it lights a bulb. At the door it rings the bell, and in the basement it drives the pump that pushes water out. Nobody says the house has five electricities. Vagbhata's vata is that one current. Prana, udana, vyana, samana and apana are the rooms it is wired into.
Physiology knows no single wind moving through the body. Even so, Vagbhata's five sort real functions in a way a doctor would recognise. Breathing, swallowing and sneezing are run from the brainstem, at the base of the head, close to where prana is placed. Speech does ride on outgoing breath shaped in the throat and mouth, as udana suggests. Fast nerve signals to every muscle let a person walk or blink, and they resemble vyana. Physiology, though, puts their source in the brain and spinal cord, not the heart. The wave-like squeezing of the gut that mixes, moves and empties food fits samana. The pelvic muscles and reflexes behind passing stool and urine and giving birth fit apana. Tying memory and complexion to an upward movement from the chest has no modern match. That grouping belongs to the old system alone.
