Pitta, the Body's Fire

Pitta is fivefold. The one between the seats of undigested and digested food, though made of five elements, has fire's quality risen in it; it has given up liquidity, and for its work of cooking and the like it is called fire. It cooks food and parts essence from waste. Staying there, it strengthens the other pittas: it is called pachaka. Pitta in the stomach is ranjaka, from colouring rasa. Pitta in the heart is sadhaka, for it achieves intended aims through intellect, retention, self-regard and the rest. Pitta in the eyes is alochaka, from seeing form. Pitta in the skin is bhrajaka, from making the skin shine.
Pitta is the text's word for transformation in the body: whatever cooks, colours or changes one thing into another. Vagbhata names five kinds by where they work. The first, pachaka, sits between stomach and bowel. It is made of all five elements, but fire dominates, and it has lost the liquid character pitta has elsewhere, so it is called fire, agni. It cooks food and sorts it into essence and waste. From its place it also lends strength to the other four. Ranjaka, in the stomach, colours rasa, the nourishing fluid made from food. Ayurveda explains elsewhere that this colouring turns rasa toward blood, and Sushruta places ranjaka in liver and spleen. Sadhaka, in the heart, carries out what a person intends through intellect, retentive memory and sense of self. Alochaka in the eyes makes seeing possible. Bhrajaka in the skin gives it lustre. Since pachaka feeds the rest, in this system's terms digestion underlies sight, skin and clear thought.
Picture an old house with one hearth in the middle of the kitchen, where the day's meals are cooked. Embers carried from that hearth keep small lamps burning in other rooms: one by the reading desk, one at the window, one beside the mirror. The hearth is pachaka; the lamps it keeps lit are the other four pittas, each doing its own work in its own place.
The first part sits close to today's picture of digestion. Stomach acid, enzymes and bile break food down, the small intestine absorbs what the body can use, and the rest moves on as waste. That is a fair match for cooking food and parting essence from waste. Alochaka also fits loosely: the eye turns light into nerve signals, a real transformation. Elsewhere the match thins. Blood is made in the bone marrow, though the liver does handle blood pigments. Thinking and intending are placed in the brain, not the heart, however much feeling is sensed in the chest. Healthy skin does reflect circulation and nutrition. There is no single substance doing all five jobs; pitta reads best as a name for the body's many kinds of metabolism. Changes in eyes or skin colour belong with a doctor.
