Meaning · English
Kapha is fivefold. The one in the chest, by its own strength and by the strength of food, holds up the trika, where neck and shoulders meet, and the heart. Staying where it is, by the work of water, it gives support to the other seats of kapha. So it is called avalambaka, the supporter. The kapha in the stomach is kledaka, for it moistens the mass of food. Bodhaka lives in the tongue, for it makes taste known. Kapha in the head is tarpaka, for it nourishes the senses. Shleshaka sits in the joints, for it binds them together.
Kapha is Ayurveda's name for the moist, heavy, steady side of a body: its structure, as vata is its movement and pitta its transformation. Vagbhata divides kapha into five by where it sits and what it does. Avalambaka, the supporter, lives in the chest. By its own strength and by the strength of food, it upholds the trika, the junction of neck and shoulders, and the heart. Staying where it is, it lends its watery support to the other four seats. Kledaka in the stomach wets the swallowed mass of food. Ayurveda explains elsewhere that this readies food for agni, the digestive fire. Bodhaka on the tongue lets taste be known. Tarpaka in the head nourishes the senses. Shleshaka in the joints holds the bones together. Each name carries its own reason, since the text names every kind for its work. One use of this list, in this system's terms, is that knowing which kapha is involved tells a physician where a trouble sits. A stiff, dry joint is one matter. A dulled sense of taste is another. For a person's life, it offers a fairer view of heaviness and moisture: they are also what holds a body up.
Picture a canvas tent after rain. The wet cloth swells and draws tight. The seams seal. The ropes and poles stand firmer than they did when dry. Here the water is not a mess to wipe away. It is part of what keeps the tent standing. That is kapha as Vagbhata draws it: moisture doing structural work, from the chest to the joints.
Today's physiology has no single substance that matches kapha. Its five forms do line up loosely with fluids and tissues that a doctor would recognise. The stomach has a mucus lining and mixes food into a wet mass. Saliva dissolves food, and taste works only on what is dissolved, so a dry mouth dulls taste. Joints are lined with a slippery fluid that cushions and lubricates them. The heart and lungs sit in thin films of fluid that let them move without friction. The brain floats in a protective fluid. Tears and mucus keep the eyes and nose working. Modern medicine treats these as separate systems with separate causes, not as one principle in five places. 'Nourishing the senses' has no exact modern match.
