For this reason, people ruled by wind are mostly faulted in nature. Hair and limbs cracked and dusky, they dislike cold. Unsteady in resolve, memory, understanding, action, friendship, gaze and gait, they talk a great deal. Small are their wealth, strength, life and sleep; their voice faint, catching, wavering, cracked. Unbelievers, they eat much, love play, and are eager for song, laughter, hunting and quarrel. They crave the sweet, sour, salty and warm that suit them. Lean and tall, they walk with a sound. Not firm, not masters of their senses, not noble, not dear to women, nor rich in children.

Vata, one of the three doshas or working principles, names movement in body and mind. The previous verse called it the strongest. "For this reason" points back to that: people in whom vata leads are, Vagbhata says, mostly of a faulted nature (the word, doshatmaka, can also mean 'dosha-driven in make-up' or 'prone to disorder'). Cracked, dusky hair and skin; a dislike of cold. Resolve, memory, understanding, effort, friendship, gaze and gait unsteady, and much talk. Little wealth, strength, lifespan and sleep. A voice faint, halting, wavering, cracked. Unbelief, a big appetite, playfulness, a pull toward song, laughter, hunting and quarrel. A taste for sweet, sour, salty and warm things that suit them. A lean, tall frame and a step that makes a sound. Not firm, not master of the senses, not noble, not dear to women, few children. Beyond vata's strength the verse gives no reason. Ayurveda explains elsewhere that vata is dry, light, cold, rough and mobile. Many of the bodily traits echo these, and the cravings run to the opposite qualities, which steady it. A tendency, painted in its era's moral colours, not a verdict.

Picture a prayer flag left on a windy rooftop through a dry winter. Its edges fray and its colour fades to dust. It snaps and flutters and never hangs still, and you hear it before you see it. Vagbhata draws the vata person the same way: what wind does to cloth over a season, this nature does to hair, skin, voice, mood and step.

Today's medicine has no equivalent of vata. It does not sort people into body types that predict character. Some single threads match ordinary experience. Lean people with little body fat often feel the cold sooner. Poor sleep can leave memory, focus and mood unsteady. Dry, brittle hair and skin are common and have many causes, from weather to thyroid problems, which is why a doctor examines rather than guesses. Attempts in the last century to link body build to temperament were largely abandoned for lack of support. The moral items, such as not noble, unbelieving, unloved and few children, have no medical basis at all. Today they would read as prejudice, however the text meant them.
