Meaning · English
Pitta is fire, or born of fire. So one in whom pitta rises high has sharp thirst and hunger, a fair, warm body, and copper-red hands, feet and face. Such a person is brave and proud, with tawny hair and little body hair. They love garlands, scented pastes and ornaments. They behave well, keep clean and cherish those who depend on them. They have means, daring, intelligence and strength, and in times of fear they become a refuge even for enemies. Their eyes are small, tawny and restless, with thin, sparse lashes, and the eyes like coolness. With anger, wine or the sun's glare, the eyes quickly turn red.
Vagbhata begins with a reason. Pitta, the body's principle of heat and transformation, is fire or fire's offspring. So a person in whom it runs high carries fire's marks. Hunger and thirst come sharp. The body is fair and warm, and the hands, feet and face have a copper flush. Head hair is tawny and body hair sparse. The eyes are small, tawny and restless, lightly lashed, and they seek coolness. Anger, wine or strong sun reddens them fast. The character runs warm too. Such a person is brave and proud, and fond of garlands, scented pastes and ornament. They are upright and clean, and protective of those who lean on them. They are gifted with means, daring, intelligence and strength, and even an enemy runs to them when afraid. In this system's terms, pitta also governs agni, the digestive fire, which is why appetite leads the list. Elsewhere Ayurveda treats this lean not as a fault but as a heat to be balanced with cooling foods, shade and calm, so that its gifts stay gifts.
Picture a cooking hearth burning well. Food cooks quickly, the kitchen is warm, and people drift towards it on a cold evening. Then a splash of oil or a gust of wind makes it flare red at once. The steady heat is the sharp appetite and the generous warmth. The flare is how quickly that same nature reddens with anger, wine or sun.
Today's medicine does not sort people into three body-and-character types. It has no match for pitta as one principle linking hair colour, appetite, courage and generosity. Parts of the picture are familiar, though. Fair skin does redden fast in strong sun. Alcohol widens skin blood vessels and flushes many faces, and anger raises heart rate and colour. Appetite and thirst really do differ between people, shaped by body size, activity and metabolism. That loosely echoes what Ayurveda calls agni. Psychology also finds lasting differences in temperament, though it measures them apart from the body. As an observant physician's sketch of a warm, quick type, it holds up. As a rule, it does not. Strong thirst or hunger that is new or unusual is worth a doctor's look rather than being put down to temperament.
