Having gained this body, which carries my marks, a person who stands firm in my dharma comes to me: bliss, the Supreme Self, living within. Steady in knowledge, freed from birth in the womb of the gunas, he sees the gunas as mere appearance, seen yet without substance. Though he lives among them, a person is not joined to those unreal gunas.

Krishna begins with the body. He calls the human body one that carries his marks, meaning it is fitted for reaching him. The commentators read this as a rare chance, since only a human life can turn and look inward. Three words carry the rest. Guna is a strand of nature: the pulls of clarity, restlessness and dullness that colour every mood and wish. Maya, here, means appearance: the gunas are seen, yet they are not the seer. Avastu means without a solid core, nothing that can be held onto. Krishna says a person who keeps to his dharma reaches the Self, the bliss that already sits in the heart. Steadiness in knowledge frees him from being born again and again out of the gunas, as a mind is reborn into each new craving. Such a person still lives among the gunas, eating, working, feeling. But he is not joined to them, because he sees them as passing and hollow. Krishna says this at the start of the Aila Gita because Pururavas is about to show the opposite: a man joined to a passing thing until it ate his years. The verse asks the listener to use this body for waking, before the next craving arrives.

A man on a train watches fields, towns and telegraph poles slide past the window. They are all really there, and he enjoys them, but he never climbs out to live in one. The gunas are the scenery. The Self is the traveller who sees it all and is not changed by it.

1. Tonight, sit for five minutes before sleep and name the strongest pull of your day: a worry, a want, a irritation. 2. Say plainly, 'This is a mood passing through, and I am the one watching it.' Notice that you can see it. 3. Tomorrow, when the same pull returns, name it again and carry on with your task without obeying it. Notice how long it takes to fade.

It is the third night that Rohan has lain awake checking his phone for a message from the friend who stopped writing. He knows each screen by heart. Each time the phone stays dark, the craving grows larger and the rest of his life, his work and his sister's calls, grows smaller. Krishna's teaching would change this one moment in small steps. First, Rohan would see the pull as a strand of mood moving through him, not as the whole truth about his life. Second, seeing it, he would stand a little apart from it, as the watcher and not the thing watched. Third, he could put the phone down and still be a person who feels the ache. The text calls such craving hollow, and says Pururavas came to see this himself. Ordinary experience agrees on one point: a craving named aloud grips a little less. The verse does not promise that the ache will vanish that night, or that grief is false. Where sleeplessness or low mood lasts for weeks, a doctor should be seen.
