Meaning · English

One should never keep company with the unworthy, whose only satisfaction is belly and loins. Whoever follows such a person falls into blinding darkness, like a blind man led along by another blind man.

Krishna gives Uddhava three words to hold. Sanga is company that sticks to you, from a root meaning to cling. Asat means the unworthy, literally the not-good, the not-true. Tamas is darkness, the state where nothing can be seen clearly. Krishna names the unworthy by what satisfies them: belly and loins, food and pleasure, and nothing beyond. He says never to keep their company, and he says why. A follower takes on the leader's sight. If the leader sees only appetite, the follower walks into the same dark, like one blind man trusting another to find the road. The warning is about company, not about despising people. It is also the opening of the Pururavas story. Krishna has just said that this body is given for waking to the Self. Pururavas is his example of a king who went the other way, led by craving and not by sight. Krishna asks Uddhava to notice who he follows, and to watch for the pull of company that feeds only appetite.

Two travellers walk through thick fog behind a man who strides ahead with total confidence. He has never seen the road either. His certainty is what draws them on, and each step takes them further from the station. The fog is the darkness, and the confident guide is the company that feeds only appetite.

1. Tonight, write down the three people or voices you spend the most time with, including anyone on your phone. 2. Beside each name, write one line: after being with them, am I clearer or foggier? 3. This week, shorten one contact that leaves you foggier by ten minutes, and add ten minutes with someone who leaves you clearer. 4. Notice, without judging anyone, what you talk about in each.

A woman sits at a long dinner with old friends. The talk is all about the next trip, the next round, the next thing to buy. She has not rung her sister in weeks, and she notices she has stopped wanting to. The verse would first ask her to see where the drift comes from: the company she keeps is shaping what she wants. Then she can look at the pattern gently, ask which gatherings leave her restless, and choose a smaller dose of them. She might ring her sister that night. Ordinary experience confirms the pull: people take on the habits and appetites of those around them without deciding to. The limit is plain. The verse does not make her friends bad, and it does not make leaving easy when they are family, colleagues or the only company she has. It also does not treat a compulsion that has taken hold of her. For that she may need a doctor or counsellor beside her, and that is no failure of wisdom.
