Ah, how wide my delusion spread, my mind clouded by craving. Held in the goddess's embrace, I did not count these stretches of my life. I did not know when the sun had set or risen because of her. Alas, I was robbed of years upon years, and the days slipped away. Ah, my own bewilderment: I let myself be made a plaything of women, I who was an emperor, the crest-jewel of kings. I left myself behind, with all my household, as one drops a blade of grass, though I was a lord. I followed the woman as she went, unclothed, crying like a madman.

Three words carry these lines. Moha is delusion, from the root muh, to be dazed: a mind that cannot see straight. Kama is craving, a wanting that grows the more it is fed. Sammoha is moha gone all the way through, so that a person is a stranger to himself. In Krishna's retelling, Pururavas speaks to himself as the fog lifts. First he sees how wide the delusion spread. His mind was clouded by craving, and he lived in Urvashi's arms without counting his own years. Sunrise and sunset passed unnoticed. Years were stolen, and he names it as theft. Next he sees what he had made of himself. An emperor, the jewel of kings, had become someone led about for pleasure. Then comes the last picture. He walked away from his own self, his court and his household, as easily as one drops straw. He ran after her as she left, unclothed, weeping like a madman. Krishna tells this story to show what craving costs when nothing checks it, and that the mind can still wake from it. The commentators treat the king's cry as the first sign of waking, not as despair. His later harsh words are disgust at his own craving, never a verdict on women. The story asks the listener to look at his own case in the same plain way: where years are going unnoticed, and what he has set down like straw.

A man sits through a long film in a dark hall, so caught up that he forgets his coat, his dinner and his appointment. The lights come on and the hall is empty, hours gone. The film is the craving, the lights are the king's waking, and the empty hall is the years he cannot count.

1. Tonight, sit for five minutes with a pen and write down one thing you keep returning to without really choosing it. 2. Beside it, write what it has cost this month in hours, in people left waiting, in things left undone. 3. Say the total aloud once, plainly, as the king did, without scolding yourself. 4. Tomorrow, at the hour it usually pulls at you, give that same hour to one person or one task you set aside.

A man sits at his kitchen table at four in the morning, still playing an online card game. Birds start up outside. His daughter's school form has been unsigned for three weeks, and his wife stopped asking him to come to bed a long time ago. The birds are what make him look up. The king's cry would change that moment in steps. He would first say what has happened: the hours were taken, and he did not notice them going. Then he would see what he has become, a father who answers to a screen. Then he would stand up from the chair, which is the same as the king turning from the departing figure. The first honest sentence spoken aloud is where it starts. Ordinary experience agrees that a mind caught in craving loses track of time and of the people nearest. The verse does not promise that the urge will vanish by morning, and it does not replace a doctor or a counsellor for a habit that has taken hold of a life.
