What is learning worth, what is austerity, what is renunciation, or hearing the scriptures? What is a quiet retreat, or a vow of silence, for the one whose mind has been carried off by a woman?

Three words carry the verse. Vidya is learning, from vid, to know. Tapas is austerity, literally heat, from tap, to burn: the discipline of hardship taken on by choice. Hrta is taken, from hr, to seize and carry away. The mind in the verse has been taken, as a thief takes a purse. In Krishna's retelling, King Pururavas speaks this to himself. He has lived for years lost in longing for the celestial Urvashi. Now he has come to himself, and he looks at what he owns: knowledge, hard practice, renunciation, scripture heard, solitude, silence. He asks of each what it is worth. The answer is plain. None of it helps a man whose mind is no longer in his keeping. A person can hold every one of these outwardly while the one who is meant to use them has gone. The sharp tone is his disgust at his own craving in that moment. It is not a ruling on women, and it is not a rule about how anyone should regard them. The object of his longing is almost beside the point. What he mourns is the theft of his own attention. The commentators read these questions as a king's self-reproach, not a lecture to others. Krishna tells the story to Uddhava to show what a captured mind costs, and that the real work lies in whose hands the mind is in. The verse asks the listener to look at what is holding their own attention.

A man locks every door and window of his house, fits a heavy bolt, and keeps a watchdog, but the thief is already inside, sitting at the table. The locks are learning, austerity and silence. The thief is the craving that has already taken the mind.

1. Tonight, sit for five minutes with a pen and paper and write down the one thing your mind returns to most often when it is free. 2. Next to it, write how many hours it took from you today, as honestly as you can guess. 3. Tomorrow, notice the first moment your attention is pulled toward it, and name it silently: "taken." 4. Do one small ordinary task fully, such as washing a cup, without that thought.

A father sits on the edge of the bed at two in the morning, thumb moving on a betting app. His daughter's school recital was this evening. He missed it, saying he would be late, and then forgot the hour altogether. He is not a stupid man. He has read, prayed and sworn off this many times. The verse puts one question to him: what good is all that, if the mind that holds it is not his? Step by step, the verse would change the moment. He would first see that his trouble is not a shortage of knowledge. Then he would name the pull as a taking, and see how many hours the evening was robbed of. Then he would put the phone down and write his daughter a note of apology. Ordinary experience confirms that a craving fed night after night shrinks the room left for everything else. The verse does not promise that the pull stops, or that the missed recital returns. Where a habit has grown into harm, a doctor or counsellor is still the right person to ask.
