Meaning · English

For years I served on Urvashi's lips, and still desire, born in the self, is not satisfied, as a fire is not satisfied by the offerings poured into it. My mind was carried off by a fickle woman. Who else can free it, except the Lord, master of the Self-delighted, whom the senses cannot reach?

Pururavas speaks to himself, in Krishna's retelling, after years of living for Urvashi. Three terms carry the verse. Kama is craving, wanting for its own sake. Citta is the mind-stuff that gets bent toward what it wants. Atmarama means one who delights in the Self, and so needs nothing from outside. Adhokshaja means the one the senses cannot reach. The first half states what he found. He spent years drinking in her company. Craving, which rises from within him, was never filled. Each offering made the fire burn higher, as ghee does. The second half asks who can free a mind that has been carried off. His answer is the Lord alone, who is at home in himself. He calls the woman fickle in a moment of disgust with himself, and the line is not a ruling on women. He is angry at his own craving. Sridhara Svami reads the closing phrase as naming the Lord who is complete in himself, and so beyond all pull. Krishna gives the passage to Uddhava as a question and an answer. Does indulgence ever end craving? No. What can? Only turning to one who wants nothing. It asks the listener to notice whether feeding a craving has ever finished it.

A mosquito bite itches, so you scratch, and it feels good for a moment. Then the skin swells and itches more, and you scratch again. The scratching is the indulgence, and the spreading itch is the craving that grows by being fed.

1. Pick one small habit you keep repeating, such as checking your phone or a sweet after dinner. 2. Today, notice how you feel just after you give in. Ask whether the wanting is gone or only paused. 3. The next time the wanting comes, wait ten minutes and sit quietly. Watch it rise and ease without feeding it. 4. In the evening, say one short prayer or name of the Lord, asking for freedom from it.

A man sits on the edge of his bed at two in the morning, thumb moving over a betting app. He lost this month's rent last week. He tells himself one more win will settle everything. Pururavas knew this moment. Each time he gave in, the wanting came back larger, and it was never answered. The verse would change the moment in steps. First he sees that the wanting rises in him and is not in the app. Next he sees that more of the same has never ended it before. Then he asks who could actually free him, and he puts the phone down and reaches for someone: a friend, a prayer, a helpline. Ordinary experience confirms that cravings tend to grow with each round of feeding. The Bhagavata teaches that the Lord alone frees the mind. This does not promise that the wanting vanishes tonight. Where an obsession has taken over a life, as with gambling, drink or drugs, a doctor or counsellor is also needed.
