Urvashi had spoken to me kindly and wisely, yet my foolish mind kept its great confusion. It does not leave a man who has not mastered himself. What has she done to me? I am like one who sees a snake where there is only a rope, not knowing the rope for what it is. The fault is mine, because my senses were never held in hand.

Pururavas speaks to himself, as Krishna retells it. Urvashi had given him sound advice, and it did not work. Three words carry the verse. Moha is confusion, the mind clouded so that it sees wrongly. Ajitatman is one whose self is not yet won, who has not mastered his own senses. Rajju is the rope, and sarpa the snake that a frightened eye sees in it. Pururavas first admits that good words did not reach him. Confusion that sits inside the mind does not leave just because someone speaks well. Then he asks what Urvashi actually did to him, and answers by himself. She was the rope. The snake, the terror and the pull, was made by his own mind, which had never learned what it was looking at. So the blame he once placed outside him comes home. The commentators read the picture this way: the trouble is in the one who sees wrongly, not in the thing seen. It is taught here because he is turning from craving to its cause. He cannot fix what he keeps blaming on someone else. The text asks the listener to look for the cause in the unsteady senses and the mind that mistakes, and to start the work there.

A coil lies on a dim path at dusk. The walker jumps back, heart pounding, sure it is a snake. A lamp is brought, and it is only rope. The fear was real, but the snake never was. The rope is the person or thing one is fixed on. The snake is the size the mind gave it.

1. Pick one thing that pulls you hard, such as a message you keep checking, a purchase, or a person you replay. 2. Tonight, for five minutes, write down what you believe it will give you. 3. Beside each item, write what it is plainly, as if describing it to a stranger. 4. Notice the gap between the two lists. Do not argue with it, just look at it once more tomorrow.

A woman stands in her kitchen at midnight, thumb over a betting app. She promised her sister last week that she was done. Her sister's words were kind and clear, and still her hand moves. In the verse's light she can take three steps. First, she can admit that good advice has not reached her, and stop treating that as a lie or a failing of her sister. Second, she can ask what the app truly is: a screen, numbers, a short jolt. The size it holds in her mind comes from her own wanting. Third, she can turn her attention to her own restlessness, the tiredness, the loneliness, the hour, and not hunt for someone to blame. Ordinary experience confirms that cravings grow louder when a person is tired and alone. The verse does not promise that seeing this will end the pull that night. It is also no replacement for a doctor or a counsellor where an obsession has taken hold of a life, and asking for that help is not a failure of the self-knowledge the text asks for.
