The verse and its meaning · Bhagavad Gita · Chapter 3 · Work Done for the World

Your Own Path, Imperfect

Bhagavad Gita 3.35

Meaning · English

Better is one's own duty, even flawed, than another's duty done well. Death in one's own duty is better; another's duty brings fear.

Three words carry it. Dharma is duty, the work that holds a life up. Swa means one's own, so swa-dharma is the duty that belongs to you by your nature and your place. Viguna means tinged with faults, lacking some of the qualities that make work look polished. Krishna tells Arjuna that his own duty, done badly, is better than someone else's duty done perfectly. He goes further: dying while doing one's own duty is better, because another's duty is bhayavaha, fraught with fear. The reason follows from the lines before it. Every person acts according to their own nature, and that nature cannot be forced into a borrowed shape. Someone who takes up a role that is not theirs works against themselves and lives anxious about failing at it. Own duty carries no such strain. It asks Arjuna to stop envying the work of others and to stay with the work given to him, rough edges and all. Shankara reads this as the duty belonging to one's station in life. Ramanuja reads it as the path suited to one's own temperament and stage. Madhva stresses that it is the duty ordained for oneself, and that giving it up out of fear brings harm.

A left-handed child is handed a right-handed pair of scissors because they cut neatly. The cuts come out clean but cramped, and the hand aches. Own duty is the scissors that fit the hand: the cut is rougher at first, but it is yours, and it needs no constant fear of slipping.

1. Tonight, write down the three tasks that fill most of your week, the ones that are truly yours to do. 2. Next to each, note one flaw you tend to excuse by looking at how someone else does it better. 3. Tomorrow, do one of those tasks for twenty minutes with its flaws accepted, without checking how anyone else would do it. 4. Afterward, notice whether the worry about comparison was loud, or whether it eased once you stayed with your own work.

A young woman sits in a family shop her father built, scrolling through a friend's photos of a glossy city job. She is slow with the accounts, and she feels her work is clumsy beside that polish. Krishna's teaching would change the moment in steps. She would see that the comparison measures her rough work against someone else's finished picture. She would ask what in the shop is actually hers to carry, the customers, the ledger, the promises her father made. She would do tomorrow's accounts badly if need be, and keep doing them. Ordinary experience bears out one part of this: effort spent worrying about being judged for borrowed work leaves less attention for the work itself. The verse does not promise the shop will thrive, and it does not say every inherited role is right for every person. It speaks to the fear of the borrowed path, not to every hard choice about leaving one.
