Meaning · English

Arjuna said: By what is a person impelled to commit sin, even unwillingly, as though engaged by force, O descendant of the Vrishni clan?

Arjuna asks about himself and about everyone. Three words carry the question. Papa is wrong action, the kind that harms oneself or others. Anichchha is unwillingness: the person does not want to do it. Bala is force, and the small words "as if" after it matter. Arjuna does not claim the person is truly forced. He says it looks as though something drives him. He addresses Krishna by his clan name, Varshneya, the way a friend would. The plain sense is that people often know what is right, mean to do it, and still do the opposite. Arjuna has just heard Krishna call attraction and aversion foes, and that is the problem he is turning over. If a person does not want to do wrong, what drags him there? This is Arjuna's view in that moment, that some power seems to work against the will. It is not yet the book's answer. The question asks the listener to look honestly at the gap between intending and doing. Shankara reads it as a search for the unseen driver, like a ruler's order a servant obeys against his wish. Ramanuja takes it as about a person who has learned what is right and still slips. Madhva, who sees the soul as dependent on the Lord, would have the "as if" warn that this is not plain compulsion.

A swimmer decides to head straight for the beach, kicks hard, and still finds himself carried sideways down the shore. He never chose that direction. A current under the surface, which he cannot see, is moving him. Arjuna's question is about that current: what moves a person against his own intention?

1. Tonight, pick one moment from today when you did something you had not meant to do, such as a sharp word or an extra hour on your phone. 2. Write one line on what you wanted and one line on what you did. Leave out excuses. 3. Notice what was happening just before: tiredness, hunger, a certain person, a feeling in the chest. 4. Do this for three evenings and see whether the same thing comes before the slip each time.

A father has promised himself he will not shout. It is evening, he has had a long day, and his seven-year-old spills milk across the homework. He hears his voice go loud before he has decided anything. Afterwards he sits on the stairs, ashamed, saying he did not mean it. Arjuna's question fits that moment. It does not start with blame. It starts by admitting that the act and the intention came apart, and that the man really did not want it. Step by step, the father can ask what was pushing him, rather than only what is wrong with him. He may find it was the day's tiredness, the noise, the fear of being late. He can then apologize to the child with honest words. Ordinary experience bears out that a tired, hungry person has less hold on his temper. The question does not promise that naming the push will stop it next time. It does not remove the shame, and it does not replace help from a doctor or counsellor if anger or low mood keeps returning. The text gives its own answer in the next verse.
