The Enemy Within

Bhagavad Gita 3.37

Meaning · English

The Supreme Lord said: It is desire, it is wrath, born of the mode of passion. All-devouring and greatly sinful, know this to be the enemy here in the material world.

Arjuna has just asked what drives a person into wrong action against their own wish. Krishna answers with two names, kama and krodha. Kama is desire, the reaching for something. Krodha is wrath, a force of its own. Krishna says both are born of rajo-guna, the mode of passion, the restless, grasping energy that keeps a mind moving toward the next thing. He then describes the enemy in two words. Mahashana means great eater: it consumes whatever it is given and is never full. Mahapapma means greatly sinful: it is the cause behind much wrong done. Then comes the instruction, viddhi, know it. Krishna asks Arjuna to recognise it first. Iha, in the material world, places the battleground in ordinary living, where this enemy works. Vairin, enemy, is a strong word for something that feels like one's own wish. Shankara reads desire and wrath as one force showing two faces. Ramanuja takes passion as the root that turns the mind outward and away from knowing the self. Krishna's answer to Arjuna is that the thing pushing him is a craving that keeps asking for more, and that it can be known and named.

A goat gets into a vegetable garden and eats one row of greens, then the next, and keeps going long after it is full. When the farmer drives it off, it bleats and butts at the gate. The goat is desire: it eats without end, and its anger at being stopped is the wrath that follows.

1. Today, when you notice a strong want, whether for a snack, a purchase or a reply, say silently, "This is desire," and wait ten minutes before acting. 2. When irritation flares, ask what you were wanting that got blocked, and write it in one line. 3. Tonight, note one want that passed without being fed, and how long it took to fade.

A father stands at a railway counter after hours in the queue. The clerk says the last ticket for tonight is gone, and he snaps at him, loud enough that others turn. Krishna's teaching reads the moment in steps. First there was a want: to get home tonight. Then the want met a wall, and anger came out of it. The anger hardly looks like desire, but the teaching traces it back. Naming the want, "I badly want to get home," separates the man from the heat of it, and he may ask about the morning train instead of shouting. Ordinary experience confirms that blocked wants quickly turn into anger, and that a name given to a feeling often loosens it a little. The teaching does not promise that the ticket appears, that the disappointment is small, or that the want goes away. It says only that the enemy is easier to face once it is known for what it is.
