Desire Veils Clear Sight

Bhagavad Gita 3.38

Meaning · English

As smoke covers fire, as dust covers a mirror, as the womb covers the embryo, so this desire covers all of this. Clear sight is there underneath, but it is wrapped, and the wrapping is desire.

Krishna gives Arjuna three pictures, and each one hides something that is still there. Fire is not put out by smoke. A mirror is not broken by dust. An embryo is not lost inside the womb. The thing is whole, only covered. The key word is avriyate, 'is covered', from a root meaning to veil or wrap. Nothing is destroyed. It is hidden. The second word is tena, 'by that', pointing back to the desire Krishna has just named as the enemy. The third is idam, 'this', meaning the whole of a person's knowing: judgment, clarity, the sense of what is right. Krishna's answer to Arjuna's question about why people do wrong against their own wish is that desire sits over their sight like a cover. The three pictures also differ in thickness. Smoke thins out and a breath can clear it. Dust needs wiping. A womb covers completely, and only time opens it. Shankara reads the three as lighter, middling and heavier degrees of covering. Ramanuja takes the covered thing to be the knowledge of the self. Madhva too takes desire as the veil over true knowing. For the listener, the lesson is that clear sight has not gone. It is waiting under the cover.

On a cold morning the windscreen of a parked car is fogged white. The road is out there, the car works, and the driver's eyes are fine, but nothing can be seen until a hand wipes a patch clear. Desire is the fog. Sight is the glass behind it.

1. Today, when you catch yourself wanting something strongly, such as a snack, a purchase or a reply, say quietly, 'I want this now.' 2. Wait five minutes before acting, and notice what you can see about the thing that you could not see a minute ago. 3. Tonight, write one line about whether your view changed once the wanting settled.

A man stands at the open fridge at midnight. He ate dinner two hours ago and is not hungry, yet he is looking at the leftover cake and already has a reason ready: it will go stale, one slice is nothing. Krishna's picture reads this moment closely. The wanting comes first, and the reasons arrive afterward, dressed as clear thinking. The verse would change the moment in small steps. He notices that the thought 'it will go stale' is smoke, not sight. He lets the want be there without feeding it. He asks what he would decide if the want were absent, and a plain answer usually appears. Ordinary experience agrees that strong wanting narrows attention and makes the case for itself sound sensible. The verse does not promise that the want will vanish, or that he will always choose well. It does not treat real hunger, or a habit that has grown into something a doctor should look at, as a matter of willpower. It says only that the clear sight is still there underneath the cover.
