Holding the Mind Steady

Yoga Sutras 3.1

Meaning · English

Holding is the fastening of the mind-field to one place. The mind is given a single spot to rest on, and it is kept there.

Four words carry this sutra. Desha means place or region, a spot inside the body or outside it. Bandha means a tying or fastening, from a root for binding. Citta is the mind-field, the whole stuff of thinking and noticing. Dharana comes from a root meaning to hold or carry, and it names this practice. The plain sense is that the mind-field is tied to one place. Nothing more is asked. The mind is not emptied and not stopped. It is given one spot to stand on and kept there. Patanjali says it here because the second chapter ended with the outer steps of the path and the drawing in of the senses. Once the senses stop pulling the mind outward, the mind still needs somewhere to stand. Dharana is that first inward step, and the sutras after it build on it. Vyasa's Bhashya, the oldest commentary, gives examples of such a place: the navel, the heart, the light in the head, the tip of the nose, or an object outside the body. He says the mind's activity is simply held there. The later commentators follow him in this.

A small boat is tied to a post by a short rope. Wind and waves still push it, and it still rocks, but it cannot drift away. The mind is the boat, the place is the post, and holding is the rope that lets the mind move a little without leaving.

1. Pick one small object, such as a candle flame, a leaf, or a spot on the wall. Sit with it for five minutes today. 2. Rest your attention on that object alone. 3. When your mind wanders, notice where it went. Then bring it back to the object without scolding yourself. 4. At the end, notice how many times you had to bring it back. Just count. Do not judge the number.
